Animal Magnetism Technique & Mesmerism

Today, “animal magnetism” is often used casually to describe someone’s charm. But the phrase has a much older and more interesting meaning. In the 18th century, it was the name of a new theory of healing that changed the history of psychology and gave birth to mesmerism—and later, hypnotism.

This article explains what animal magnetism is, where it came from, how the magnetic healing technique works, and how the idea is used in spiritual practice today.

What Is Animal Magnetism?

Animal magnetism was the name given by Franz Anton Mesmer (1734–1815), a German physician, to an invisible natural force he believed flowed through all living beings. The word “animal” comes from the Latin anima, meaning breath or soul—so “animal magnetism” means the magnetism of living beings, not of animals.

Mesmer believed that:

The Magnetic Healing Technique: Basic Structure

  1. Preparation. The practitioner centres themselves with breathing and intention.
  2. Rapport. Practitioner and receiver sit comfortably; the practitioner explains the process and obtains consent.
  3. Calming passes. Slow, downward passes from head toward the feet to relax the receiver.
  4. Focused work. Gentle passes over areas where the receiver feels tension.
  5. Closing. Sideways (transverse) passes to complete the session, followed by grounding and a short rest.

From Hardik’s practice: In our classical mesmerism classes, students learn to perceive subtle temperature gradients and auric resistance before they ever touch. Working with magnetic passes teaches an intuitive sensitivity that transforms how one interacts with human energy fields.
