A Reiki attunement is the moment a student is formally initiated into Reiki. It is often the part of a Reiki course that people feel most curious—and sometimes nervous—about. The good news is that an attunement is gentle, quiet and simple to receive.
This guide explains what happens during a Reiki attunement, what people commonly experience and how to prepare.
What Is a Reiki Attunement?
A Reiki attunement (also called initiation, or reiju in Japanese-style Reiki) is a short ritual performed by a Reiki Master. In the Reiki tradition, it is believed to open or strengthen the student’s connection to Reiki energy so they can channel it for themselves and others.
Attunements also connect the student to a lineage—a chain of teachers going back to Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki. New to Reiki? Start with our beginner’s guide to Usui Reiki.
Attunements at Each Reiki Level
- Level 1: Opens the student to Reiki for self-practice and treating others with hands-on work.
- Level 2: Connects the student with the first three Reiki symbols, including distance Reiki.
- Level 3 / Master: Connects the student with the master symbol; the Reiki Master level includes learning how to attune others.

The Reiki Attunement Process: Step by Step
- Preparation and explanation. The teacher explains the process and answers questions so you feel comfortable.
- Sitting quietly. You sit on a chair with your feet flat on the floor, eyes closed, often with your hands together in front of your chest (gassho).
- Setting intention. You may be invited to relax, breathe slowly and hold an intention for your Reiki journey.
- The master works around you. The Reiki Master moves around you, working at the crown of your head, your hands and sometimes your back or feet. They may use Reiki symbols, gentle touch, or breath. You do not need to do anything except relax.
- Completion. The master closes the attunement, often by placing your hands back in gassho and letting you sit quietly for a few moments.
- Integration. Afterward, students usually share their experiences and practise self-Reiki.
An attunement itself usually takes only a few minutes per student.
What to Expect During Reiki Attunement
Experiences vary widely. Students commonly report:
- warmth or heat in the hands or head;
- tingling, pulsing or a sense of pressure;
- colours, light or images behind closed eyes;
- deep calm or a sense of stillness;
- emotional release, such as tears or laughter;
- nothing unusual at all.
All of these are normal. Feeling nothing does not mean the attunement “didn’t work.” Many students notice changes gradually during practice rather than in the moment.
The 21-Day Period After Attunement
Many Reiki lineages suggest practising self-Reiki every day for 21 days after an attunement. This period is often described as a time of adjustment. The simplest approach is to continue daily self-Reiki, drink enough water, rest when you need to and journal your experiences.
How to Prepare for Your Reiki Attunement
- Rest well the night before.
- Eat lightly on the day and stay hydrated.
- Reduce alcohol, heavy food and excess caffeine in the days before.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Set an intention—why you want to learn Reiki and what you hope to bring into your life.
From Hardik’s practice: At The Golden Lotus, attunements are conducted with deep personal care and reverent tradition. Students frequently share feelings of gentle warmth spreading through their palms, emotional lightness, and a quiet sense of homecoming to their own inner energy.
Begin Your Reiki Journey
Your first attunement is part of the Reiki Level 1 & 2 Course. Further attunements are given as you progress through the Reiki Level 3 Course and the Reiki Master Teacher Course (Level 4–5).
