Can Reiki really be shared when the practitioner and receiver are in different cities—or even different countries? In the Reiki tradition, the answer is yes. Distance Reiki (also called remote or absent Reiki) is a standard part of Reiki training, usually taught at Level 2.
This article explains what distance Reiki healing is, how a remote session works step by step, how to prepare, and what you can realistically expect.
What Is Distance Reiki Healing?
Distance Reiki healing is the practice of sending Reiki to a person who is not physically present. Reiki practitioners understand Reiki as a universal life energy guided by intention. From that point of view, energy is not limited by physical distance, so a trained practitioner can connect with a receiver anywhere.
Distance Reiki is traditionally taught at Reiki Level 2, where students learn the distance symbol, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (see Reiki Symbols and Meanings). Practitioners use this symbol as a focusing tool to form a connection with the receiver.
How Remote Reiki Works: Step by Step
While each practitioner has their own style, most remote sessions follow a similar pattern.
- Consent and booking. The receiver agrees to the session and a time is fixed. Consent is a core ethical principle in Reiki.
- Intake. The practitioner usually asks for your full name, your location during the session and your intention (for example, relaxation, emotional balance or support during a stressful period). Some practitioners also ask for a recent photo.
- Preparation by the receiver. You find a quiet space, silence your phone, and sit or lie down comfortably for the session time, often 30–60 minutes.
- Connection by the practitioner. The practitioner centres themselves, sets an intention and connects using the distance symbol and a focusing method.
- The session. The practitioner works through the body in their mind or on a “proxy,” often following the same sequence as an in-person session.
- Closing and feedback. Many practitioners send a short message afterwards. You may be asked to share what you noticed, drink water and rest.

Common Distance Reiki Techniques
- Photo method: The practitioner holds or looks at a photo of the receiver while sending Reiki.
- Proxy method: A pillow, soft toy or the practitioner’s own knee represents the receiver’s body.
- Visualisation: The practitioner imagines the receiver in miniature between their hands.
- Name and location: The practitioner writes or speaks the receiver’s name and location to focus the connection.
None of these methods is “more powerful” than the others; they are simply ways to hold focus and intention.
Distance Reiki Benefits
People choose distance Reiki for practical and personal reasons:
- Convenience: No travel; you receive the session from home.
- Access: You can work with a practitioner you trust, wherever they are based.
- Comfort: Some people relax more deeply in their own space.
- Continuity: Remote sessions make regular support easier during busy or difficult periods.
- Relaxation: Many receivers report feeling calm, lighter or more balanced after a session.
Experiences vary, and these benefits describe what people commonly report rather than guaranteed results.
What You May Feel
During a distance session, some people notice warmth, tingling, gentle pulsing, heaviness, emotional release, colours behind closed eyes or drowsiness. Others feel simply relaxed. Some people fall asleep, which is not a problem. Feeling nothing obvious does not mean the session “failed.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be awake during a distance Reiki session?
No. Many people rest or fall asleep. Lying down quietly is enough.
Is distance Reiki as effective as in-person Reiki?
Within the Reiki tradition, both are considered valid. The main difference is the experience—some people prefer physical presence, others prefer the comfort of home.
Can I send Reiki to someone without asking?
Traditional Reiki ethics recommend asking for permission first. If that is not possible, send it only “for their highest good.”
How long is a distance Reiki session?
Most sessions last 20–60 minutes, depending on the practitioner and your intention.
